In the fall of 1996, a new initiative called HeadsUp (Heads Engaged in Advancing Departmental Strategies through Unifying Paradigms) began to take form.  The operational framework agreed upon then still guides the organization activities more than a decade later.

HeadsUp is an association of Heads of Academic Units who collectively subscribe to a common philosophy of education, research, and a spirit of mutually beneficial cooperation and service at The University of Arizona.

The purpose of HeadsUp is to provide a forum for established and new Heads of Academic Units to do the following:

share wisdom, experience, and ideas with the aim to solve problems
            Strengthen leadership
provide a vital voice to the administration
            promote effective communication
build a sense of community at The University of Arizona

A major goal of HeadsUp is the development of common perspectives and values while building trust to achieve mutually beneficial goals for all segments of the institution.  The main objective is to bring Heads of Academic Units together in a variety of circumstances and formats ranging from formal meetings to discuss and analyze prescheduled objectives, to informal gatherings for brainstorming ideas to address issues of concern to participants.

HeadsUp is the formal vehicle for Heads of Academic Units to contribute to the solution of problems affecting The University of Arizona, and to develop strategies and execute plans that implement a shared vision of the purpose and objectives of the institution.  HeadsUp provides a voice in the decision making processes and a forum to participate in a meaningful way in leadership and management activities of our university.
